BIOGRAPHY

Ovidia Yu is an award-winning novelist and playwright. Having attained a master’s degree in literature, she went on to receive a Fullbright Fellowship to attend the University of Iowa’s International Writer’s Program.

Published in 2013, her second novel, Aunty Lee’s Delights, became a hit and spawned three more books in the series. She has since established herself as a successful mystery novelist with The Frangipani Tree Mystery and most recently, The Betel Nut Tree Mystery.

Ovidia has written over 30 plays and has collaborated with various theatre groups, including TheatreWorks, The Necessary Stage and Wayang-Wayang Theatre Company. Her plays, which features strong characters and focuses on the changing roles and identities of Singaporeans, have been staged for both local audiences and those abroad. Her best known plays include Playing Around, Three Fat Virgins and The Woman in a Tree on the Hill, which won the Scotsman Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Her other accolades include the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Singapore Foundation Culture Award, the National Arts Council Young Artist Award and the Singapore Youth Award (Arts and Culture). 

Ovidia’s works have since been reviewed by news outlets such as The Straits Times and The South China Morning Post. Her next book, The Paper Bark Tree Mystery, is set to be released in 2019.
