poetry.sg and prose.sg:
★ Features the work of over 150 poets and prose writers, and looks forward to including many more to come.
Since inception, both archives have become invaluable resources for over 270,000 individuals, establishing themselves as essential tools for students, educators, researchers, and Singapore literature enthusiasts. The writers featured span a range of languages, including English, Malay, and Chinese, with Tamil writers to be added in the coming year. Just this year, we added profiles for Anita Patel, Esther Vincent Xueming, Euginia Tan, Miriam Wei Wei Lo, Hamid Roslan, Justin Chin, Crispin Rodrigues, and Cheryl Julia Lee.
☆ Continually evolves the way readers engage with literature and our literary history.
Through special features, including our most recent “The Dreamwork of Singapore Migrant Poetry”, which traces the emergence of the first migrant poetry communities in Singapore and key milestones over the years, our archives hope to allow readers to encounter Sing Lit in varied and dynamic ways.
★ Honours the contributions of local poets by archiving them for future generations.
Our archives hosts an extensive collection of multimedia content, totaling 243 uploads, archiving significant moments in Singapore’s spoken word history, interviews with prominent writers, along with readings of their own work. Recent uploads include new readings by Euginia Tan, Daryl Lim Wei Jie, and Loh Guan Liang.
☆ Prides itself on making quality content to introduce readers to our local writers.
Both archives fill a critical gap in providing carefully researched critical introductions to each writer’s entire body of work, fulfilling a different function from single-book reviews. Written by contributors and rigorously reviewed by our editors and academic advisors, these critical introductions are housed alongside the authors’ biographies, bibliographies, and selected poems and prose excerpts.
★ Looking ahead, both teams are actively exploring new features, including on children’s poetry and deaf poetry, to highlight and guide readers through important facets of Singapore’s poetic history. This year, prose.sg welcomed a new team comprising Wen-yi Lee and Wei Mei Tan, who are hard at work on a rebrand of the archive and a new slate of activities including round table meetups and a regular interview series, to create much-needed spaces of dialogue for prose writers in Singapore that accounts for the overlapping, multilayered medium of prose.
We’ve always believed that Sing Lit should be made accessible for everyone, help us keep the momentum going!
WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS
SUPPORT OUR CONTRIBUTORS
poetry.sg and prose.sg thrive because of the dedicated individuals who contribute their time and expertise into researching, writing, and editing quality content for publication on the site. This includes crafting insightful critical introductions to profiled writers and special feature articles which undergo a rigorous editorial process. Your donation helps us compensate our contributors for the time and energy they put into expounding our literary history.
PLATFORM DIVERSE VOICES AND SUBGENRES
poetry.sg and prose.sg currently archives a selection of English, Malay, and Chinese language writers. Donations to this campaign will go directly towards enriching our archive by introducing Tamil writers, and specific subgenres in our literary history to reflect Singapore’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape. Your support will help us commission upcoming critical introductions to ten Tamil language poets, and features on deaf poetry for publication on the poetry.sg website. Donations also enable us to produce high-quality multimedia content aimed at preserving our poets’ voices and documentation of significant poetry events and performances.
INVEST IN THE FUTURE
Our initiatives have made a significant impact on our community and the next generation of writers and readers. With your support, we aim to sustain the operations for poetry.sg and prose.sg for many years to come–so school curricula can continue using our archives to introduce students to Singapore’s rich literary landscape and inspire them to write their own work!
PROMOTE SINGAPORE WRITING INTERNATIONALLY
In 2024, the poetry.sg editorial team showcased Singapore poetry to an international audience of writers and readers at Poesiefestival Berlin. With your support, we aim to create more opportunities to promote Singapore Literature on the global stage through more international collaborations.
TESTIMONIALS
“poetry.sg and prose.sg are excellent resources for teaching and learning Singapore literature. I especially value how they bring literary texts into conversation with critical introductions and multimedia materials. The archives keep Singapore’s rich and diverse literary history both accessible and engaging, and offer students and educators useful entry points into local writing.”—Asst. Prof Michelle Chiang, NTU
“I am a teacher in Singapore and am a longtime fan of your website. I've always felt so proud that you have done such amazing work all these years to champion Sing Lit. I would love to contribute to your cause and help by supporting your efforts to make SingLit accessible. I most certainly have found poetry.sg very useful in my teaching and have used it extensively to introduce SingLit to my students.” —Elizabeth Scott, Chatsworth International School
“[poetry.sg] conveys what I take to be the website's intention really well: to celebrate the rich and continually evolving poetry of Singapore. I've tried to emphasise this about local literature as a whole in our seminars. For a small country which has been shaped through necessity by pragmatic aims and economic and practical concerns - survival initially and then development and, more recently, re-development - the literature and the poetry, which I'm especially familiar with, has somehow managed to be such a high quality… The website has been a marvellous resource for me to dip into whenever I want that boost or I'm feeling like I want to tweak my seminar notes. It's a great comfort to know that there's such a professional and well-maintained website to inspire me and remind me of the richness, wit and vibrancy of Singapore's poetry.”—Brendan Buxton (Module Leader, SUSS & SIM)
